On January 18, Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School put on the second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, sponsored by the students of Diggin’ Diversity. Cammille Henry, Diggin’ Diversity President, introduced the event by acknowledging Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the importance of the holiday. Brooklyn Ellingson-Moreno, seventh grade Diggin’ Diverstiy member, introduced Minister Alfred Smith, the event’s performer. Asiyah Mallick, sixth grade Diggin’ Diversity member, introduced keynote speaker, Dr. Les Green.
Minister Al Smith sang Climb Every Mountain from the Sound of Music, as well as Everything Must Change by George Benson. Minister Smith shared words of encouragement and inspiration. Keynote speaker, Dr. Les Green inspired the students by sharing his personal story of how he became a predominant leader in the community. Going from a prison inmate to St. Cloud State’s first African American instructor in 1972 in the College of Education, Dr. Green has made the most of his opportunities. He served as vice chair of Minnesota Corrections Authority for eight years, and earned his Doctorate degree in Educational Administration and Leadership. He has spent over 30 years working with teachers to help them enhance their teaching skills related to the diversity of their students. Dr. Les Green has dedicated himself to making our community a better place where we can all succeed together.
