What is JA BizTown?
JA (Junior Achievement) BizTown is a 12,000-square foot simulated city located in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is a new state of the art facility where students become adults for a day. There are only 25 markets in the world that provide this opportunity to experience hands-on application of classroom learning and our students were fortunate to be able to participate in this amazing opportunity. This field trip allows students to apply what they have learned and experience being responsible consumers, workers and citizens.
The JA Capstone Program was presented to Pleasantview and Mississippi Heights students with the intent to engage them in important aspects of work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy while providing a solid foundation of free enterprise, business, and economic education. Fourth grade students from Pleasantview and Mississippi Heights Elementary spent the last six-weeks engaging in and mastering the concepts presented within a Junior Achievement Experiential-Based Elementary School Capstone Program.
The culminating activity, putting learning to work, was to attend BizTown, a simulated community where each student became a BizTown citizen and assumed a role in one of the town businesses. While role-playing their responsibilities as an employee, students experienced economics first-hand by producing and selling products, receiving a paycheck, working as a member of a business team, repaying a business loan, shopping, and managing a personal bank account. Many of the strategies that our fourth-grade teachers had presented to the students in class were exercised at the BizTown Experience; inquiry, logical reasoning, collaboration, and investigation were all skills that were required and exercised throughout the day. Over 50 parent volunteers joined at the event and it was deemed a day very well spent!
