The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota named Sauk Rapids-Rice High School student Abel Cordero (pictured fourth from the left) as the 2020 Youth of the Year on Friday, January 31.
Cordero was given this honor because of his servant leadership role at the Eastside Boys and Girls Club, where he has been enrolled since fifth grade. Cordero helped with work to build out the garage used by the club’s construction trades program. He has organized special activities at the club and was the co-emcee for the Youth Arts Initiative holiday showcase there.
In addition, Cordero was nominated for his resiliency and because he faced his past struggles with academics head-on. Cordero has worked hard to improve his grades and is committed to graduating on time. Cordero juggles school, a job and time at the Boys and Girls Club. He hopes to get his degree in criminal justice in the future.
The Boys and Girls Clubs Youth of the Year award comes with a $2,000 scholarship. He will participate in the state Youth of the Year competition in March. The award embodies the Boys and Girls Clubs’ three outcome areas: leadership, character and service. Criteria to receive the award is based on academic achievement; communication and relationship skills; leadership and teamwork; character, honesty and integrity. Assistant principal Steve Wagner nominated Cordero for the honor.
Congratulations, Abel! We wish you well in all that you do.
