For years, schools freely shared immunization data with clinics and public health agencies in order to ensure children were up-to-date with their shots. Recent increased attention on the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) has highlighted how this long-standing practice is not allowable.
FERPA does not allow schools to share immunization or other health data with anyone outside the school without patient or parent/guardian consent. If a health care provider is seeking immunization data on a patient from the school, they must get consent from the patient or their parent/guardian. This federal law overrides the Minnesota law that allows schools, health care providers, and selected others to share immunization data.
Immunization records on file for current and former students (graduated within the past 6 years) can be requested by using the Immunization Record Request Form below. Please note that requests sent during the summer months may take up to 2 weeks to receive.
