Kylie's Kickin' Cancer: A Lemonade Stand with Heart

We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on one of our incredible seventh-grade students, Kylie Myers-Schleif, whose enthusiasm and dedication to making a positive impact have left an indelible mark on our community. Kylie's journey into community service began at a young age, and her story is one that truly warms the heart.

Kylie's journey started in kindergarten when the Walk-For-Life at Mississippi Heights Elementary aimed to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. With her Aunt April battling brain cancer, Kylie's family decided to go above and beyond. In May of 2017, they launched "Kylie's Kickin' Cancer Lemonade Stand." From that moment on, a tradition was born, and each year the community eagerly looks forward to the event.

In second grade, Kylie showcased her unique talent by introducing Grammy Award winners, "The Okee Dokee Brothers," to the entire audience. The fundraising concert, organized by her mom, became a memorable event. The brothers, Joe and Justin, enjoyed the hospitality of Kylie's family, including delicious homemade chili prepared by her Grandma Marilyn. It was a moment of community, talent, and warmth that truly set Kylie apart.

Balancing academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities and community engagement can be challenging, but Kylie has mastered the art. The lemonade stand preparations happen on weekends leading up to the event in May. Kylie and her friends, along with their parents, turn the occasion into a community event, making it something to look forward to each year.

Despite facing challenges, Kylie's spirit remains unbroken. A month before "The Okee Dokee Brothers" concert, her Aunt April passed away, and the event was dedicated to her memory. In 2020, when COVID-19 disrupted plans, Kylie and her family faced setbacks, but their determination remained unshaken.

Plans are underway for another lemonade stand this spring, and Kylie is hopeful that May 2024 will be the biggest one yet. Kylie believes that the lemonade stand brings joy to the community. People have fun, and the funds raised contribute to supporting those fighting cancer. With every passing year, more activities are added, and the community continues to rally behind the cause. Notable personalities like Mel Bloch have even lent their support, making each event more special than the last.

 As we look ahead to May 2024, the anticipation is palpable. Kylie's positive spirit and dedication to making a difference in the community are an inspiration to us all. Let's join hands in supporting Kylie's Kickin' Cancer Lemonade Stand and make this upcoming event the most remarkable one yet!
