A Journey of Leadership and Growth

Riann, 18, moved to Minnesota from Denver, Colorado, in 2017. As the middle child of five siblings, she grew up with strong family values and a deep appreciation for community. Her parents, originally from Somalia, instilled in her the importance of hard work and giving back.

It was during her freshman year at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School that Riann discovered her passion for leadership. Joining the Student Council and attending her first state conference opened her eyes to the ways students can create positive change. That experience sparked a drive that would shape her high school career and beyond.

A Legacy of Involvement

Riann has immersed herself in a variety of activities, including Student Council, Minnesota Honor Society, Green Team, Senior Class Officers, Lacrosse, and DECA. Through her involvement, she has worked tirelessly to expand leadership opportunities for students in her school and across the state.

One of Riann’s most rewarding projects was co-hosting a Relay for Life 5K run at the start of the school year as part of a DECA community awareness campaign. This initiative not only raised funds for cancer research but also united students and community members in a meaningful cause.

Making an Impact

Her leadership efforts have not gone unnoticed. Riann has received several prestigious recognitions, including the Triple A Award, the Minnesota Association of Student Councils Presidential Award, and the Questbridge Prep Scholar and College Match Recipient honors. These accolades reflect her dedication to academic excellence, leadership, and community service.

One of her proudest moments was seeing the growth of the Sauk Rapids-Rice Student Council. When she attended her first division conference as a freshman, only four students from her school participated. Last year, thanks to her efforts in the Central Division Executive Board, over 30 Sauk Rapids students attended, planned, and led the event, marking a major milestone in student engagement.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

Balancing multiple extracurriculars, a rigorous academic schedule, and PSEO courses has been challenging, but Riann credits organization and dedication for helping her manage her time effectively. She advises fellow students who are hesitant about getting involved to take the leap.

“You have more time than you think, and you shouldn’t let your fears hold you back,” she says.

Looking ahead, Riann plans to pursue a university education and attend law school, intending to become an attorney. She believes the skills she has gained—teamwork, communication, and leadership—will serve her well in her future career.

A Lasting Influence

Through her work in student government, community initiatives, and leadership roles, Riann has helped strengthen connections within the Sauk Rapids-Rice community. She hopes her contributions will inspire others to step up, get involved, and leave their own impact on the school and beyond.

Her advice to those wanting to make a difference: “Start small, stay open to opportunities, and believe in your ability to create change.”

With her passion, drive, and commitment to service, Riann Mohamud is a true example of leadership in action. As she moves forward in her journey, there’s no doubt that she will continue to inspire and lead wherever she goes.
