Unified Club Night Brings Students Together Across Grade Levels

Music, movement, laughter, and meaningful connections fill the gym each month as Unified Club Night continues to grow into one of the district’s most anticipated inclusive events, now drawing 40 student registrants from grades 6–12.
What began as a simple request from students has evolved into a powerful example of belonging in action. Unified Club Night was developed after a strong desire from previous eighth-grade Unified Club members who moved on to high school but wanted to maintain the meaningful relationships they had built with middle school students. Rather than letting those friendships fade, students and staff worked together to create an opportunity that would keep those connections strong across buildings and grade levels.
Through a partnership with Sauk Rapids-Rice High School, which secured support through a 21st Century Grant funded by United Way, that student-driven vision became a reality.
Unified Club Night is open to all students in grades 6–12, of any ability level, and is free of charge. The event promotes inclusion, friendship, and fun in a welcoming environment where everyone belongs.
The evening is designed in an “open gym” format, allowing students to choose activities based on their interests. Options often include riding scooters, playing Just Dance, creating artwork in a designated art corner, tossing a football, kicking a soccer ball, or simply spending time talking and laughing with friends. There is no strict agenda — just opportunities for authentic connection.
The spirit of the event aligns with inclusive programming modeled after initiatives like Special Olympics Unified programs, which focus on bringing individuals with and without intellectual disabilities together through shared experiences.

To ensure a safe and supportive environment, special education teachers and paraprofessional staff attend each event, providing support with behavior needs, bathrooming assistance, supervision, and overall safety. This thoughtful planning ensures that every student can participate comfortably and confidently.
Unified Club Night is organized thoughtfully and intentionally by Shantal Spoden and Tami Hackett, whose dedication and behind-the-scenes work have been instrumental in its success. From coordinating partnerships and securing funding to planning engaging activities, communicating with families, organizing staff support, and ensuring every detail is covered, their commitment reflects countless hours of preparation. Their leadership has created a space where students feel valued, connected, and excited to return month after month. Their hard work has truly transformed a student's idea into a sustainable and impactful district event.

Special appreciation is also extended to middle school principal Laura Arndt, whose leadership and ongoing support of inclusive programming have helped Unified Club Night flourish. Her commitment to creating opportunities where all students feel seen, supported, and included has been essential to the program’s continued growth.
Currently offered as a monthly after-school event, organizers hope to expand opportunities as interest continues to grow. For students who are unable to attend after school, the middle school also offers Unified Club during the school day, providing another meaningful avenue for involvement and connection.
At its core, Unified Club Night is about relationships — maintaining them, building new ones, and strengthening a culture of belonging across grade levels. What started as a group of students wanting to stay connected has grown into a vibrant, inclusive community where differences are celebrated, friendships flourish, and the impact of thoughtful leadership is clearly felt long after the gym lights turn off.
