Students Transitioning to an Educational Program for Success (STEPS)

STEPS is an alternative program designed to assist juniors and seniors with educational needs that cannot be met within the traditional high school program. A smaller class size, individualized student learning, and allowing students to work at their own pace, provides a fresh start for educational success.

The STEPS program offers a highly structured, self-contained learning environment with equal emphasis on teaching of academics and behavioral/social skills and a focus on attendance and respect. The STEPS curriculum is computer based, however, students are required to demonstrate reading, writing and math skills through projects that accompany the computer learning programs.

STEPS Holidays Project Announced

It seems a little early to be talking about the holidays, but the Sauk Rapids Rice High School STEPS Program is already gearing up for its most meaningful and fun event of the year. This will be our 14th Annual “Adopt a Family for the Holiday” project. Eighty students will be working very hard to raise enough money to be able to help between fifteen and twenty families during the holiday season.

We provide the families with grocery gift cards, gas cards, warm clothing and toys galore for the children. Our wonderful Sauk Rapids community has always played a big part in this, and we could not be successful without your help.

Our students will soon be selling tickets for a steak fry, going through the town asking local business owners and managers for food and merchandise certificates and hoping that generous people will donate cash for our families. Although this can be a very busy time for our students, we have discovered that the harder we work, the more joy we receive. We all understand that we are spreading the true meaning of the holidays throughout our project.

How You Can Help

• Plan now to attend the STEAK FRY at the Sauk Rapids VFW on Friday, December 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 and we will also host a silent auction. Please help us by purchasing tickets from our STEPS students or ordering them by calling Joyce at 258-1761.
• If you are a business owner or manager, please help us by donating food or merchandise certificates. Each of our family’s receive an envelope filled with nice things they may not normally be able to afford to buy or do.
