National Honor Society

Membership in National Honor Society (NHS) is based on scholarship, character, leadership, and service.

Scholarship

In order to qualify for NHS, juniors must earn a cumulative 3.8 GPA and seniors must earn a cumulative 3.7 GPA. Students must also meet the following course requirements:

Course Requirements for NHS:
• Three (3) years of math (minimum must include algebra, geometry and advanced algebra).
• Three (3) years of science.
• Two (2) years of foreign language
• Four (4) years of social studies
• Four (4) years of English/Language Arts (this includes either Composition 12 or Advanced Placement for the writing requirement senior year)

These requirements parallel the courses that the University of Minnesota and the state university system require for initial entry.

Character

Students must exhibit a positive and encouraging attitude that displays respect to both adults and students. This attitude must display the following:
• Exemplifies desirable qualities of personality (enthusiasm, friendliness, fair play, respect for others).
• Demonstrates highest standards of attitude toward honesty and reliability.
• Attends school regularly except when ill and is seldom tardy for class or meetings.
• Completes assignments on time or discusses circumstance for late work with the teacher.
• Complies with the spirit of school rules.

Leadership

• Students must display leadership in school, the community, and/or the
• classroom.
• Supports classmates in their endeavors.
• Influences others for good both in the classroom and in social situations.
• Takes initiative in planning and organizing functions.
• Sees a project through – does not become discouraged.
• Is able to get others to work with him/her and can usually express him/herself clearly.

Service

Students must be involved in community and/or school activities to better the community around them.
• Cheerfully performs duties assigned by advisor.
• Is willing to work outside the school day when possible.
• Seldom misses a function or meeting.
• Shows specific instances of good school/community citizenship.
• Works well with others.
