Family and Consumer Science
The Family and Consumer Sciences Department is a broad and unique program in our district. Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) education empowers individuals and families across the lifespan to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society. Our unique focus is on families, work and their inter-relationships. Family and Consumer Sciences education prepares students for family life, work life, and careers by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed for optimal balance between people and their environments.
We believe that Family and Consumer Sciences classes help each student to build self-esteem and self-confidence in order to become a self-sufficient, contributing member of the family and society.
Education in the FACS program fosters the development of decision-making skills. Students develop skills in communication, conflict resolution, resource management, nutrition, and interpersonal relationships that have immediate and long-term application. The program encourages individuals to be independent rather than dependent and pro-active rather than reactive. As a result of this experience, students will be able to address life issues impacting their home, family and career choices, which they face now and will face in the future.
