Rice Elementary has three Macintosh computer labs.
All of the labs contain 30 computer stations,
a teacher station, and a printer and are used for
scheduled computer classes and open lab time.
Kindergarten: Students have two 30-minute computer sessions scheduled during the rotation. The curriculum centers around basic computer operations ranging from proper use of a mouse to keyboards. We use a variety of software programs throughout the year.
Grade 1: All of the classrooms are scheduled for two 30-minute sessions each rotation. In first grade students learn how to save and retrieve their work from our file server. They also work on basic word processing skills and graphic applications.
Grade 2: Each classroom is scheduled for two 30-minute sessions each rotation. The Internet is introduced to students who have been given parental permission. At the beginning of the year the rules and expectations are explained to the students and a permission form is sent home to sign. Students are only allowed to visit bookmarked websites that follow the lesson we are working on (students will not be allowed to do any searching on their own this year). We continue working on word processing skills and students learn pre-keyboarding skills including home row. Some of the graphic applications they will learn this year are how to cut/copy/paste as well as move/add/rotate/resize and flip objects.
Grade 3: Each classroom is scheduled for two sessions each rotation. The rules for Internet use are reviewed at the beginning of the year and a permission slip is sent home. Students are only allowed to visit bookmarked websites again this year (they will not be allowed to search on their own). The Internet will be used for research to complete projects, so copyright rules and how to cite sources are taught. Formal keyboarding is also part of the curriculum this year. In addition students will create multi-media projects.
Grade 4: Each classroom is scheduled for two sessions each rotation.
Grade 5: Each classroom is scheduled for two sessions each rotation.
