Pleasantview Elementary Computer Labs

Pleasantview Elementary has three Macintosh computer labs. Each computer lab has 30 computers. Our main instruction and research computer lab is equipped with eMacs, a color printer and a black printer. Our second research and instruction computer lab is equipped with iMacs and a black printer. Our third computer lab is equipped with iMacs and is used for keyboarding instruction and open lab time.

Computer classes are taught by Euteneuer, Deanna.

Kindergarten:

Students that attend school every other day come to the lab once during a rotation for 30 minutes. Students who attend school every day have two 30-minutes computer sessions. The curriculum centers around basic computer operations ranging from proper use of a mouse and keyboard to using cd-roms. We use a variety of software programs throughout the year.

Grade 1:

All of the classrooms are scheduled for two 30-minutes sessions each rotation. In first grade students learn how to save and retrieve their work from our file server. They also work on basic word processing skills and graphic applications.

Grade 2:

Each classroom is scheduled for two 30-minute sessions each rotation. The Internet is introduced to students who have been given parental permission. At the beginning of the year the rules and expectations are explained to the students and a permission form is sent home. Students are only allowed to visit bookmarked websites that follow the lesson we are working on (students will not be allowed to do any searching on their own this year). We continue working on word processing skills and students learn pre-keyboarding skills including home row. Some graphic applications they will learn this year are how to cut/copy/paste as well as move/add/rotate/resize and flip objects.

Grade 3:

Each classroom is scheduled for one 50-minute session each rotation. The rules for Internet use are reviewed at the beginning of the year and a permission slip is sent home. Students are only allowed to visit bookmarked websites again this year (they will not be allowed to search on their own). The Internet will be used for research to complete projects, so copyright rules and how to cite sources are taught. Formal keyboarding is also part of the curriculum this year. In addition students will create multimedia projects. Computer curriculum also includes trimester testing in STAR Reading and STAR Math as an additional measure for students’ capabilities.

Grade 4:

Each classroom is scheduled for one 50-minute session each rotation. The curriculum includes skill development in the basic operations and concepts, technology productivity, research, communication and problem solving. Formal keyboarding instruction is continued for development of proficiency and accuracy. Another important area in technology includes the Internet, relevance, safety and bias of electronic information sources. Computer curriculum also includes trimester testing STAR Reading and STAR Math as an additional measure for students’ capabilities.

Grade 5:
