OPERATION Mentoring: Supporting Children of Military Families
Big Brothers Big Sisters offers appreciation and support to military children and their families for their strength, sacrifice, and service. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota recently received a contract to help support children of military families (National Guard, Reserve, Active-Duty, Gold Star Families). Military children face unique challenges that may include separation and loss in addition to the stresses of military life. To help provide additional support, Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children with the friendship of a positive and caring mentor.

Supportive relationships with non-parental adults can powerfully influence the course and quality of children’s lives. Researchers at the Search Institute identified “adult role models,” “supportive relationships with three or more other adults,” and “adults in community valuing youth” as essential to youth’s health and well-being.

Big Brothers Big Sisters also provides military families with educational and networking opportunities, community contacts, and offers fun family activities.
