Rice Elementary Reading Room
February 3rd, 2012
As part of Rice Elementary’s celebration of the One District, One Book reading of The Cricket in Times Square, a special reading room has been created. The room is decorated like the city of New York! One corner is Central Park and another is Times Square. Of course, Mario’s newsstand is there complete with a cricket cage! Students visit the room to read and discuss the story.
As an added bonus, when the room is dark, the windows in the entire city skyline glow in the dark and our marquee flashes, drawing attention to our book. Streetlights can be lit and stars glow on the ceiling and walls. Students are invited to read with flashlights! Rice Elementary’s Literacy committee created the room for students as they do every year to celebrate reading and I Love to Read month.
