Choir Solo & Ensemble

2010 Solo/Ensemble Information

What is it?
Solo/Ensemble is a great opportunity for you to work with some of the best voice instructors from around our state.  You will prepare a solo (or duet, trio, quartet, ensemble, etc.) with Dr. Vermillion or Mr. Hasty’s assistance during the months of November—January.   At the contest, you will perform your song in a classroom in front of a judge and he/she will critique you and work with your for about 10 minutes and give you some great feedback on your singing.

Why should you do it?
It’s an awesome chance to grow musically and be challenged on a more individual basis.  Your song will feature some of your best attributes as well as challenge you in your weaker areas.  Even if you’re shy or unsure and nervous about singing by yourself, this will help you build your self-confidence.  Participating in this competition will help you grow as an individual and help towards a choir letter.  Students that receive an “Excellent” rating or higher receive certificates and/or medals and looks great on college applications!  Awards are presented at the Spring Concert.

When is it?
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.
(You miss a day of school.)

How do I prepare?
Choose a song (with Mr. Hasty or Dr. Vermillion) by the end of November and sing up for lessons to work with them.  This WILL require OUTSIDE of class time to memorize!  But the rewards are worth it!  You will get at least 2 opportunities in January to run your song with a professional accompanist.  If a CD is available, you will get a burned copy of your song to practice on your own.  There will be a mandatory Solo/Ensemble Recital for participants on Friday, January 22nd.  This will help ensure pieces are ready for contest and have a chance for you to get the “bugs” out.

Does it cost anything?
At SRRHS we are fortunate we do not charge entry fees as other schools do for the competition.  BUT, we do require $32 for the accompanist (if you use one).  This will cover rehearsals with your accompanist, the Recital and your performance at Contest.  Transportation is covered in your bus fee.  If your entry does not require an accompanist, there is no cost.

So, go for it!  You have nothing to lose!
