Varsity Band (Grade 9)
The Varsity Band is a curricular band that strives to offer a challenging and enjoyable setting for students who play traditional band instruments. This band includes all students who play a band instrument in grade 9. The objective of this course is to continue to improve their instrumental performance skills through traditional and non-traditional musical works ranging from grade 2 to grade 3 1/2 in difficulty. Basic elements of music history and theory are taught as a reinforcement of the skills associated with understanding the performance of music. The content of this course continues to change based on the needs of the students, the performance settings, and the influences of the changes in society which can be made relevant through the study of correlating musical works.
The band traditionally performs once each trimester with each concert aligned to teach different styles and demands of music. All students are encouraged to enroll in the band for all three trimesters. This time creates challenges with all of the options available to students in grade 9; however, most students are able to satisfy all of their required courses and experience a variety of electives in grades 9-12 and still stay in band for all 4 years of high school. Should you have any questions or concerns about the 9th grade band schedule, expectations, or opportunities, please contact Mr. Campbell directly.
