Reading Challenge at Mississippi Heights and Pleasantview Elementary Schools

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

The schools received 70 copies of the young readers’ edition of the New York Times Bestseller Three Cups of Tea, from Cathy Cooley, a Sauk Rapids parent. The challenge was for all 4th and 5th grade classrooms to read the book.

Three Cups of Tea is the true story of Minnesota native Greg Mortenson who failed in his attempt to climb K2 (the 2nd highest mountain in the world) but in the process of his failure, found a way to bring peace by building schools in some of the most remote parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The reading challenge began with an assembly welcoming Sauk Rapids’ own Jesse Godzala. Godzala will climb Mount Kilimanjaro this summer as part of the Kidney Climb to raise money for the Coborn’s Cancer Center in memory of Jesse’s father, Thomas Godzala, who died from kidney cancer in 2006. The money raised will be used to help kidney cancer patients and their families with the costs of medical care.

At the assembly, Jesse helped the kids understand the challenges of mountain climbing and how he’ll be working to make a difference as Mortenson has done.
Three Cups of Tea is mandatory reading for all senior U.S military commanders, and all special forces deploying to Afghanistan are required to read it.
